The Quake Shake!

close-up of unpeeled almonds

There was a 5.9 earthquake today that hit southern California. The Shakeology® Facebook fan page got inspired and came up with a new recipe called the “Quake Shake.” It sounds really good too! Check out the ingredients:

Personally, I almost always blend my Shakeology with almond milk. I’ve yet to add crushed almonds though. Should be really good!

Eating Clean and the Paleo Diet – Two Healthy Eating Options to Consider

Steak with potatoes and vegetables

Figuring out how to eat well to maintain a healthy weight is a challenge for many. Fad diets come and so does the weight. Weight loss may occur on a fad diet but often, it comes right back, plus a little extra. The way to a healthy weight is not to view eating as a diet but more as a lifestyle change. Have you ever heard the saying “eat to live not live to eat”? It’s important that we figure out a way of eating that is healthy and easy to stick with.

Two popular methods of eating are clean eating and the paleolithic diet (or caveman diet.) Both are somewhat similar in that they avoid the consuming of processed foods. Clean eating is a practice among many athletes and particularly bodybuilders. It consists of eating 5 – 6 small meals per day. Refined sugar is eliminated and alcohol is avoided (or cut back significantly.)

The paleo method of eating mimics the meals of cavemen/hunter-gatherers. These foods would include meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. It excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.

What I like about both ways of eating is that they avoid processed foods. That means you won’t be picking up food from a drive-thru window. It takes discipline to follow either diet but once they are followed long enough, it should become a healthy lifestyle rather than a temporary way to lose weight.

Note: It is important to check-in with your health care provider before transitioning into a new way of eating.

Two good resources on both styles of eating are:

3/4 cup water
Ice to taste (I generally like about 4 – 5 ice cubes)

Shakeology Scam

Portrait of a man

It is no surprise that many folks are searching around about Shakeology® and what it is really all about. It is becoming quite popular and has even become victim to the “Shakeology scam” search which is common for new products. I’m the same way when it comes to evaluating a product. I want to be sure I’m going to get the best value for my money.

Shakeology is most popular for it’s weight loss benefits. It is most commonly used as a healthy meal replacement. The way it works is by replacing one meal with a shake and eating healthy for your remaining meals. It’s also important to include exercise on a regular basis. Before replacing any meals, it’s a good idea to speak with your health care provider to be sure it is safe for you to do.

Why it is an Excellent Meal Option

The large appeal of the shake are the ingredients. There are other meal replacement shakes on the market but you would probably find it difficult to find an equivalent in terms of ingredients. We’re talking vitamins, protein, essential amino acids, and a super-fruit blend packed with antioxidants. Some of the fruits included are the popular acai, goji berries, and pomegranate just to name a few.

Besides all of that, it also contains a proprietary probiotic blend, wheat grass, oat grass, flax seed, green tea (decaffeinated), and so much more. That means when you’re using it as a meal replacement, you are getting the vitamins your body needs plus the added bonuses like the antioxidants.

Of course the true test is to try it out for yourself. The company (Beachbody®) that sells Shakeology offers a 30-Day “Bottom-of-the-Bag” Guarantee – meaning that you can try it for 30-Days and return it for a refund, even if you finished the bag. Now that is an awesome guarantee.

However, if you’re like me and absolutely love the chocolate flavor (I’m a chocoholic!) you’re better off saving money by ordering it on auto-ship to have it delivered every month with free shipping. So as you can see, there is no “Shakeology scam.” It is the real deal and definitely worth a try!

The Healthiest Chocolate Peanut Butter Treat

Partially eaten chocolate bar and wrapper

One of my favorite candies of all time are the peanut butter cups. Chocolate and peanut butter go so well together (at least in my opinion!) However, eating candy every day is not ideal nor is it healthy. Thankfully, there is a better way to enjoy this same treat without the guilt. I use chocolate flavored Shakeology® blended with peanut butter to achieve the same flavor. Shakeology is a healthy meal in a glass and adding some peanut butter makes it taste even more like a peanut butter cup.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shakeology Recipe:

  • 1 scoop of chocolate flavored Shakeology
  • 8 oz of water (or almond milk, milk, etc.)
  • 3 or 4 ice cubes (more makes it thick like a milkshake)
  • 1 tbsp. peanut butter (reduced fat, organic, etc.) or almond butter

It’s delicious and a much healthier alternative than candy! You get your sweet treat plus all of the benefits of drinking Shakeology. Enjoy!

Easy Tips To Eat More Vegetables with Every Meal

Different sorts of vegetables

It’s not uncommon for most people to not eat the daily recommended servings of vegetables. Most of us often eat on the go while rushing to work, school, or taking care of errands. Needless to say, most of our diets are lousy and we often pay the price in weight gain and lack of energy. Below are some easy tips to make eating vegetables a common occurrence.

1. Substitute fries for vegetables: A lot of us eat out more often than cooking at home so when this happens, substitute those unhealthy side dishes with vegetables instead. Most restaurants don’t have a problem with doing this. You’ll save yourself tons of calories, fat, and carbs by eating veggies instead.

2. Eat vegetables for breakfast: Vegetables at breakfast may sound odd to many folks but it’s so easy to incorporate them in your first meal of the day. Try egg white omelets with chopped broccoli, spinach, tomato, or whatever vegetable you like. You can also simply add a vegetable as a side with your meal.

3. Snack on them: There are a lot of good crunchy vegetables to snack on. Try making a healthy dip and use baby carrots, raw broccoli, or celery to eat it with. You can snack guilt free and get your vegetables in between your meals.

4. Drink your vegetables: When you’re on the go, you can fit in some of your servings of vegetables with a healthy shake like Shakeology. Drinking Shakeology is like going to the salad bar 5 times.

Of course, add vegetables to every dinner meal and you should be set for the day. Don’t be skimpy with the portions either. Make yourself a good portion of vegetables whenever you cook. If you’re in a restaurant, ask for a double serving.
